Licensed MJ Business: Coming out of the Shadows

With the creation of the legal recreational marijuana market, many people and businesses formerly involved in the black and grey marijuana markets have been given the ability to come into the public eye. The problem, however, is that after years of minimal, if any, regulatory oversight, these businesses struggle to keep up with the legal requirements to do business in this way. Recreational marijuana is heavily regulated and, as such, requires a high degree of patience, attention to detail, and willingness to comply with seemingly arbitrary rules and regulations to succeed.

About Matt Cleary:

Matt holds a JD from the University of Colorado Boulder Law School. He has been interested and involved with the cannabis industry since it began, first in Colorado, and now in Washington.

Prior to joining NWMJ Law, Matt worked as a legal intern for the New York State Office of General Services helping with commercial leasing, competitive bidding, and Freedom of Information Act requests. He was a Research Assistant to Professor John Nolon at Pace Law School working on a publication regarding land use law, specifically focused on urban agriculture. He worked a brief stint with the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board as an enforcement officer in training before deciding he preferred helping businesses work within the law rather than patrolling it.

Matt dedicated his time in Law School to corporate and transactional law and developed an interest in Bitcoin regulation; an internationally traded digital commodity or “cryptocurrency.” He is published in a well-received book on International Bitcoin practice and regulation. Matt’s work at NWMJ Law includes contract law, regulatory compliance, and license application process.

Matt has a background in Music with a BA in Music Theory and Performance. In his free time, Matt loves to hike, play soccer, as well as write and perform music with the band he leads in Seattle.
